Because of Louise Hay of You Can Heal Your Life, I know the exact chocolatey shade of my eyes. What Louise calls “mirror work” is essentially taking a good, long look deep into your eyes in whatever mirror you have available to you – which she colourfully demonstrated at I Can Do It! Vancouver by pulling a compact out of her bra! While gazing at yourself with compassion, she asks you to tell yourself those three blessed words: I love you. And mean it. And if you don’t mean it (yet), do it anyway…because eventually, you’ll crack a smile and then you’ll blow a kiss and then one day you’ll want to reach right in to that mirror and give that gorgeous, unique creature a great big squeeze!
It sounds like a really easy thing to do, right? I’ll tell you, though, going through the motions may be unnerving; the first few times I looked at this stranger in the bathroom mirror I wanted to look away. I mean, it’s a close-up shot, right? Even when applying eye makeup, we’re not usually in such intimate contact with ourselves.
And why do this, you ask? In fact, why do any of these “I Love Myself” tips? Well, Louise brings up an excellent point. I’m quoting her from her book, You Can Heal Your Life, where she says:
“When we love, accept, approve of ourselves exactly as we are, then everything in life works. Our health improves, we attract more money, our relationships become much more fulfilling and we begin to express ourselves in creatively fulfilling ways.”
And besides ourselves, who benefits from that? Take a look around: your family, your friends, your neighbourhood, your local community, your global community.
So, get rid of that phrase in your head that you’ve heard a million times before: Take a long HARD look at yourself! No, thank you. I’d rather look at myself softly, gently, with chocolate eyes brimming with love.
When was the last time YOU looked deep in to your own eyes? Willing to give it a shot this week? Share your experiences here – we’d love to hear them!
