Today I am going to share with you something that I have held on to for 8 years…yes, 8 years…thinking, “I should really do this some day.” Almost a decade later, that ‘some day’ hadn’t come – until now.
Hole-punched and kept safe for that special day, is an article from the 2004/2005 FOOD MAGAZINE Winter issue. Food Never Felt So Good, the title teased with an accompanying photo of someone receiving a massage with chocolate. Seriously – how could I not read this article? Read it, I did. And when I turned the page to find easy recipes for Strawberry Moisture Masque, Lemon Coconut Milk Bath, Grapefruit and Sugar Body Scrub, and Papaya and Pumpkin Exfoliant – well, I clipped that page right out of that magazine and vowed to give these a try.
To this day, I have not applied a single strawberry to my face or scrubbed anything grapefruit into my elbows. But what a fun way to love myself? It’s creative, it’s natural, it’s healthy and for heaven’s sake…do I really need to justify doing this?
I shouldn’t have to say this, but I will – this is not just a girly thing! If you have skin, you need to take care of it. I googled “homemade facial masques for men” and found several sites with recipes to give your skin a treat. Here is one that provided a few options.
So, this week I am going to try:
STRAWBERRY MOISTURE MASQUE (for face and body)
1 tsp (5 mL) yogurt
1/2 tsp (2.5 mL) honey
6 medium strawberries, mashed
1 tbsp (15 mL) oats
Blend strawberries, honey, oats, and yogurt and whip by hand. Leave on clean skin for 20 minutes.
According to this article, “This masque is detoxifying, draws out excess oils and adds moisture to the skin. It is gentle enough for all skin types. Strawberries contain ascorbic acid and 3 times the amount of vitamin C as oranges. Honey is great for scar tissue and broken capillaries. Oats are wonderful for dehydrated skin.” (Food Magazine Winter, 2004/2005, p. 22)
I hope you join me this week and treat yourself to something yummy for your skin. I’d love to hear if you do – or if you have recipes of your own you’d like to share, please do.
